۞ History: Here at the Type-Moon wiki.

۞ Personality:
When one first meets Saber, they might think of her as nothing more than a vain, egotistical, conceited woman. And... uh. Well. They're not completely wrong. Saber's ego can engulf her entire empire easily. Whether it be in art or in battle, or anything really, she believes herself to be on par with the gods. In fact, she thinks she's greater than the gods, and will not hesitate to tell people this. Art? The muses themselves will be jealous. Music? Apollo and his lyre ain't got nothing on her. Fighting? She's willing to take on Hercules himself.

Saber values beauty above everything else. Everything she does is elegant, from the way she talks to the way she fights. She surrounds herself with it as often as she can, from her villa to the people she spends her time with, to the very empire she once ruled over. To her, beauty is the most important thing in the world, and she will not hesitate to admit this. Tied into that is her love of art. All art. She sings, she writes, she acts, she paints... you name it, she's tried it. With... varying levels of success. She doesn't appreciate it when people insult her talents, and admits that she nearly killed a friend when he didn't approve of her latest artistic work!

Yeah, she's.... kind of a hothead, compared to her lookalike. She would much prefer charging in head-on rather than waiting back, and has a very short fuse when she thinks others are teasing her or insulting her. And it's not just opponents that might suffer her wrath - she'll turn it on her Master as well if needed! She will yell at her, possibly intimidate her if she says the wrong thing... but she won't go beyond that. She may have a very short fuse, but she won't go completely off the handle if someone sets her off.

THAT BEING SAID. Under her immense ego and vain attitude is a woman who can actually be pretty compassionate! In the preliminaries, while she congratulates her new Master on summoning such a powerful Servant such as herself, she readily accepts her as her equal, and expects her to act as such. She's not afraid to give credit where credit is due, either; even if an enemy did something impressive, she will grudgingly point this out. She's honorable, and disapproves of underhanded tactics (like, say, poisoning an opponent you would have dueled later in the week, Archer). If you're going to kill an enemy, it would be much more dramatic to face them on the field of battle in a glorious fight to the death, rather than taking the coward's way out and sabotaging them before they could fight to their full potential. She's also a determinator. She admires determination, and refusing to back down in a fight is a good way to earn her respect. Hell, the very first thing she says to her new Master is that she should "embrace your fear of death and fight on regardless!" Fear is a horrible thing, yes, but she won't look down on those who are afraid. She will only encourage them to face their fears.

Back on the note of compassion, it should be said that while she believes herself to be on par with the gods, and she frowns upon tricksters and backstabbers, she doesn't look down on people she thinks aren't as powerful or amazing as herself. When her Master is caught in the fierce grip of uncertainty and spends much of the Grail War trying to figure out just who she is and what she's fighting for, does Saber admonish her? No. She supports her Master at every turn, and while she does get frustrated sometimes when Hakuno doesn't have answers to her prodding, she doesn't chew out the girl for it. No, she merely offers her support, until the very end. She cares greatly for her Master - loves her, even - and will go to the ends of the earth to help her however she can.

This compassion also shines through in the way she ruled the Roman Empire; despite how history painted her as a tyrant, many of the things she did, from handing out money to abolishing many taxes, was to help the common folk. She loves her people, with an intensity that rivals that of the sun itself. Her passion, whether for her people, her art, or... anything really, is truly a force to be reckoned with. But... this is also a cause of conflict for her. She did everything for her people, tried to shower them in love and attention, because she wanted to be loved and showered with attention in return. But this love was so intense that the people could not understand it, could not reciprocate it, and it led to a rift between her and her people, which in turn led to her eventual exile and suicide.

So tl;dr Saber is an incredibly egotistical hedonist, but she's actually a pretty good person when you get past that.

۞ Magical Powers, Skills, and Weapons: Saber is a Servant, a Heroic Spirit - the most powerful familiar a magus may summon. They are mythological beings and historical heroes brought back to this world solely to do battle for the Holy Grail. These familiars are very, very powerful. It is extremely rare to find a human who can survive a fight with a Heroic Spirit, let alone defeat one. Added to this, her class, "Saber", is widely agreed to be the most powerful of the seven classes.

Each Servant's abilities are mapped out by stats, E being the weakest, followed by D, C, B, and A. EX is also a rank, but it's more of a "holy crap I just broke the scale" rank. Saber is at a disadvantage because her Master was a sort of... bug in the system. Because of this, all her stats start out at E rank, but can be developed however the player wishes. Some of her parameters develop more quickly than others, though, and by the end of the game, the ideal stat ranks for her are:

Strength: A+
Agility: C
Endurance: A
Mana: E
Luck: E

Along with those stats, Saber has several other supportive abilities. She has the Magic Resistance ability inherent in all Sabers, though it's at a pathetic rank of C. The game describes this as the ability to " Cancel spells with a chant below two verses. Cannot defend against Magecraft on the level of High-Thaumaturgy and Greater Rituals", which means that while she won't be affected by simple magic spells, anything that requires real effort will hurt her just as much as other Servants. This is because of another "ability" Migraine (Rank B), which greatly reduces her aptitude for mental skills, though she's still able to use certain buffing magic and a reality marble (mentioned below).

She also possesses the rather... interesting skill, Imperial Privilege, which is a whopping EX Rank. This essentially means that because she's so awesome, she can instantly become a master of any Skill not her own - Riding, Charisma, Military Tactics, the list goes on - for a short time. Since this skill is above A rank, this can even extend to skills that affect the body, up to and including Divinity.

Her active, offensive skills are all just fancy swordplay, so there's no need to make note of those, but there is one that stands up that must be noticed: the skill Thrice-Setting Sun. The only magic skill she possesses (unless you count basic buffing and her Noble Phantasm), when cast, it sets what is pretty much an auto-revive status effect. She can take a mortal blow and rise up right after, but only with a miniscule amount of health. If she's not healed right after, she'll probably be cut down with the following blow.

Saber is a bit of an oddity in her class, since her Noble Phantasm - the ultimate attack that embodies a Heroic Spirit's legend - is not her blade, or an attack particularly focused on her blade. Instead, her Noble Phantasm is a Reality Marble - a manifestation of one's own inner world. Saber's Reality Marble takes the form of Aestus Domus Aurea: Golden Theater of the Deranged, a magnificent theater based on the famous villa she built for herself in her first life. For such a visually flashy technique, its use is rather simple; it allows Saber's attacks to bypass an enemy's guard, and the enemy itself grows weaker and weaker over the course of the Noble Phantasm's activation. It's never explained in-game why this Noble Phantasm does what it does, but it's pretty easy to guess: Saber is a performer. An entertainer. It would make sense for her ultimate technique to be a zone where the spotlight is always on her, and she gains a boost because of that attention. Like all Reality Marbles, Aestus Domus Aurea can only be maintained for a few minutes at a time, and can only be used once per battle, as it is extremely taxing on Saber's mana.

Last but not least, a bit of a mundane ability note: as a spirit, Saber has the ability to become incorporeal when she's not needed around, and can summon her sword from thin air.

۞ Other Abilities: Saber is gifted (or at least... she thinks she is...) in many forms of art; painting sculpting, acting, singing... you name it, she's tried it! She's also a skilled gladiator, and has taken part in many athletic competitions in the past, so she knows how to drive a chariot, throw a javelin, etc etc.

Thanks to the Moon Cell she's also been given knowledge of several different languages; she's fluent in Latin, her mother tongue, and also knows Japanese and English.

۞ Journal Sample:
[When the mirror flickers to life today, the other residents will see what is most certainly a familiar face on the magical network - Saber! The red one. That typical smug look on her face is present in full-force today, and there's a certain spark in her eyes as well.]

Good day, my fellow refugees! I do hope your time here has been well, because it certainly has been for me! [Wow this seems... genuinely kind of her, asking how the others are doing!] This land, and the opportunity to meet so many new people, has been quite revitalizing! Thanks to such new, wonderful experiences, the Muses have returned to me, and since then, I have hardly been able to put down the brush!

[... Oh, okay, she's just using this opportunity to brag. The picture shakes a bit as Saber turns her mirror around so it will instead face... well. A painting! A rather elegant painting of a smiling girl, clad in some sort of fancy, traditional Roman wear, with what is most certainly that great city in the background behind her. It's... pretty good! A fellow artist could probably spot some errors here and there, but overall, it's a great piece.]

Well? What do you think? Please, do not hold back! Tell me just how wonderful you think this masterpiece is. I know it may take a few moments to get over your awe at the beauty of one of my creations, but that silence only serves to enhance your compliments!

[That smug look softens a bit, into a bit more of a genuine smile, and that spark in her eye turns to a look not unlike a puppy waiting for praise.] I wish to hear your words the most, Praetor. This is my gift to you, after all! I must make sure it is perfect before I can present it to you in person.

۞ Third Person Sample:
Saber didn't really like dwelling on things. She lived in the moment, did whatever she could to surround herself with things she enjoyed and took pleasure in, so there was no need to dwell on stupid bad thoughts or memories! Except...

Except there were times when those thoughts would come unbidden, and no matter how hard she tried to distract herself by painting or sculpting or spending time with her Master or that other Saber, she would always become silent and moody. Every day, without fail, at this point of the day.

Sunset.

When the orange rays of the waning sun began spilling over the land, Saber had excused herself from her companions and retreated back to her room. The sensible thing would be to shut the window, draw the curtains, and try to busy herself with something until the moon began to rise. But... she couldn't. It was a horrible form of self-torture, but she couldn't help but lean against the windowsill and watch as the firey red and orange orb in the sky slowly dipped beyond the horizon. It irritated her a bit, too, knowing that such a breathtaking sight stirred up nothing but pain and despair for her. It was her own fault, for choosing such a time, but still...

Memories played across her mind, as clear as if they had only happened yesterday. The incredible fear gripping her heart, knowing that her pursuers were closing in on the unnamed villa where she had spent her last days in exile. Despair, that it had all come to this - the citizens of Rome turning away from her, letting those foolish revolts drive her from her throne. She could still feel the cool weight of the dagger in her hand, could still feel the intense pain as she drove the blade into her throat...

But the worst part... the worst part was that, even when she was lying on the ground and choking on her own blood, she could still feel a flimsy spark of hope when the centurion had broken in, and in an act that had surprised even himself, had wrapped her up and attempted to comfort her in her last moments. But that hope was overrun by bitterness, and she had laughed out one last dramatic line before finally passing on.

She hated the sunset. It was one of the few beautiful thing she could not love. But... perhaps here, away from the pain and horror that was the Holy Grail War, with interesting new companions, a new land to explore, and the girl she loved by her side... well. She's not sure the sight will ever be able to endear itself to her heart, but maybe she'll find some better, more beautiful memories to take the place of the ones that left her feeling so bitter.
